Description
Very comprehensive chronicle, illustrated with a large number of contemporary b/w photos, of the history and operations of a German fighter unit of the German Air Force in World War 2: Formation of I./Jagdgeschwader 27 and first operations in the West, operations in the West in May and June 1940, operations along the Channel, refreshment and operations in the South and Southeast (December 1940 to April 1941), operations in North Africa (April 1941 to October 1942), operations against Malta (October 1942), last missions over North Africa (October/November 1942, deployment in the West (January to August 1943), deployment in the defence of the Reich (August 1943 to May 1944), deployment to repel the invasion of France and in the West (June to October 1944), deployment in the defence of the Reich and in the West (November 1944 to May 1945). Very extensive appendix with tables on staffing, aerial victories, losses, etc.
In September 1998, the third and last part of the series on the use of the Messerschmitt Bf 109 in service with the groups of Jagdgeschwader 27 was published. This volume essentially traces the path of the I. Gruppe and also describes the path of the Geschwaderstab, the Ergänzungsgruppe and the Spanish Freiwilligenstaffel, which was temporarily attached to the Geschwader. The main part of the work, which deals with the deployment of the Bf 109 with I./JG 27, describes the path of this group from its formation in October 1939 through the period of the "Sitzkrieg", its participation in the French campaign and the deployment against England, as well as the subsequent short deployment in the south and southeast from Sicily and in the Balkans. The group's African deployment, which has already been the subject of numerous publications, is described correspondingly more succinctly. In contrast, the subsequent deployment of the group, initially over France and Holland, and especially from August 1943 onwards within the framework of the Reich's defence, which has only been dealt with comparatively briefly in previous publications on JG 27, but which also meant the period of the heaviest missions and sustained heavy losses for I Group, is described in detail. The same applies to the further deployment to repel the invasion of France in the summer of 1944 and the subsequent renewed deployment over the territory of the Reich until the end of the war. The work is completed by the appendices, prepared in the usual form, which list the occupation of the Group's command posts, their losses and successes, their locations, etc. At the end, there is a comprehensive list of sources as well as a list of the Group's activities. At the end, there is a comprehensive list of sources and an acknowledgement of the numerous helpers who contributed to the work.
