Description
Immediately after the First World War, the Freikorps were a vital tool for the survival of the weak German state, which was under existential threat from within and without. Only reluctantly taken up, this tool was soon to disappear once the tasks at hand had been completed. The soldiers in these units, which were primarily intended to combat armed insurrection, polarised people by their very existence; their public perception was negatively predetermined before they were even deployed. Subsequent, one-dimensional portrayals eventually became widely accepted and obscured an understanding of their actions and motivations. René Hoffmann opens up overlooked perspectives on events and actors and, with the help of previously neglected sources, finds answers to questions about the self-image and perception of the Freikorps soldiers against the politically and psychologically powerful backgrounds and events of their time.
