Description
This detailed book tells the story of SS-Panzer-Abteilung 17 in the Battle of Normandy.
The operations of this tank battalion of the 17.SS-Panzergrenadier-Division Götz von Berlichingen are less well known than those of the other armoured battalions of the Waffen-SS engaged in the summer of 1944. This is probably due to its late formation at the end of 1943/beginning of 1944 and its almost complete annihilation in the Roncey Pocket at the end of July 1944, after only 6-7 weeks of operations. SS-Panzer-Abteilung 17 was also one of the most atypical battalions in mid-1944 in more ways than one: a tank battalion equipped with assault guns, while the assault artillery units were equipped with Sturmgeschütz III, it was to receive some of the brand new Sturmgeschütz IV, making it the only Waffen-SS unit to be equipped with this type of machine in Normandy!
With one of the shortest training periods on these new vehicles, its young tankers excelled in anti-tank combat, perfectly camouflaged in the hedgerows of the Normandy bocage. The GIs often said: A Tiger or a Panther, even if they are very dangerous, can be seen from a distance, but this Sturmgeschütz, its often too late when you spot it. But the young German crews also paid a high price for their commitment in the face of the American unites and would not be able to resist the tidal wave of Operation Cobra. Of the ten or so machines that managed to escape the Roncey Pocket, only one made it to Germany Amongst its many losses, the battalion reported the death of its commander in August 1944.
The book tells the story of this little-known Panzer unit through exceptional photographs, unpublished documents, and illustrations by Felipe Rodna. It is a must-have for those interested in armoured warfare in the battle of Normandy.
