Description
The operations of the Allied armies to capture the Belgian port of Antwerp and to control the Scheldt estuary in August 1944. After the successful liberation of France, the Allies urgently needed an efficient deep-water port for their further operations towards the German Reich, and this supply port was to be the Belgian city of Antwerp. The planning, execution and effects of the Allied operations against Antwerp are described here in detail in words and pictures.
