Description
German order police were involved in the murder of Jews in Poland to an unimaginable extent. Alongside the SS and the auxiliary police in the extermination camps, the German order police were not the decisive instrument in initiating and directing the murder of the Jews, but they were in carrying it out. About 30,000 policemen carried out or secured shootings, herded the Jews to the deportation trains and guarded them on their way to the extermination camps.
In Chelmno, police officers participated in the murder of 15,000 Jews in gas vans. Police officers hermetically sealed off the ghettos so that Jews died from hunger, cold and disease. Police officers also secured the transports from a dozen countries in Europe to the extermination camps in Poland, where about 630,000 of these deportees were killed immediately in the gas chambers.
