Description
This publication is based on a dissertation submitted in 2001 to the Institute of History at the KF University in Graz. This dissertation deals with the history of the II Battalion, using the example of this unit to illustrate the significance of the "Brandenburgers" for the "Blitz-Kriegs-Strategie" of the German Wehrmacht. The sources used come from the Military Archives in Freiburg im Breisgau, the Public Record Office in London and publications of former "Brandenburgers".
At the beginning of World War 2, the need arose for German tank troops to have infantry support in the attack on sensitive transport nodes. To this end, Abwehr II of the German military intelligence service (Amt Ausland Abwehr) initiated the establishment of its own commando force, which would subsequently go down in World War II history as the "Brandenburgers". Within this unit, beginning in 1940, the II Battalion, with command in Baden near Vienna, was built up for the operational area of Eastern and South-Eastern Europe. In addition to Sudeten Germans, this battalion consisted mainly of a mixture of (North and South) Tyroleans, Salzburgers and (Lower) Styrians. Their distinguishing mark on the mountain cap was the edelweiss. These mountain troops of the "Brandenburgers" were to become the elite of the elite in the course of the war.
