Description
The Barbarigo battalion was among the first Italian units to be used on the Nettuno front to counter the Allied landing which took place in January 1944 on the Lazio coast, near the towns of Anzio and Nettuno (then united in a single municipality called Nettunia). On 19 February 1944, the Barbarigo men left for Rome, aboard civilian buses: the battalion was structured around a command and four companies, for a total of 980 men including officers and marines. As weapons there were MAB machine guns, some Breda 30 machine guns and some Breda 37 machine guns. There was no artillery, there were no machine guns and there were also no coats to protect from the cold. The First Special Service Force, an elite mixed Canadian and American unit, was deployed in front of the marines. Even without much war experience, the marines of Barbarigo, under the incessant enemy fire that rained down from land, sea and sky, on soaked ground, suffering continuous losses, managed to maintain their positions with a great spirit of sacrifice. They remained in the line for three months, during which they learned the trade of weapons in the field.
