Description
In the summer of 2021, NATO troops left Afghanistan after almost two decades. On 15 August of the same year, the Taliban took power. Since then, the question of whether and to what extent the international humanitarian, political and military engagement in Afghanistan has failed has been debated. This book takes stock. It brings together contributions from German-speaking social scientists and legal scholars who have conducted research on and in Afghanistan over the last two decades.
It puts to the test what knowledge underpinned the intervention and what ideas characterise current discussions about its failure. The contributions illustrate the diverse and often contradictory demands and motivations with which the intervention actors acted. They trace how Afghans experienced the developments. And they emphasise the significance of the Afghanistan missions within the intervening societies. This makes it clear that the question of the balance sheet is above all a question of perspective and that the legacy of the intervention goes beyond its military failure.
