Description
Volume 10 of the series "Security Policy and Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Germany" published by the Military History Research Office. Who shaped the newly founded Bundeswehr from 1955, who built it up? In the formation phase of the armed forces up to 1970, men from the birth cohorts 1889 to 1950 came together. Some had already served in the Imperial Contingent Army or the Reichswehr, many in the Wehrmacht. Others were unduty volunteers and conscripts who had experienced the Second World War as children or the reconstruction of the Federal Republic of Germany as post-war babies. Generals, staff officers, officers, sergeants, non-commissioned officers and enlisted men: they were all equally involved in this reconstruction process and shaped the internal structure of the new army in different ways. In 16 contributions, the methods of biography and generational research are used to portray selected soldiers in their time and milieu.
