Description
A "Mindset of National and Alliance Defence" is necessary, writes the Inspector General of the German Armed Forces in a daily order of 22 September 2020. This demand sounds like a departure, but at the same time it irritates. Doesn't it mean a frontal attack on the Generation Einsatz, which has formed its self-image with sweat and blood over 30 years in many foreign missions of the Bundeswehr? Does this new way of thinking call for different attitudes and attitudes than those with which more than 400,000 soldiers have returned from previous Bundeswehr missions abroad?
Or is there perhaps even an intention behind the term "way of thinking" to once again put the widely unloved and barely understood Innere Führung to the test?
The authors of the Innere Führung Yearbook deal with the uncomfortable great power, system and order competition, the role of the United Nations, the further development of NATO as a US-dominated alliance, as well as with security policy opinions among the German population. Further topics are the role of civil defence and the reserve, the digitalisation of the armed forces as well as their challenges of leadership, organisation and training. All contributions focus on the question of what conclusions we should draw from this for the way we think about national and alliance defence.
