Description
The Gehlen Organisation took over some of its enemy images with personnel from the Gestapo and other Nazi authorities. Newly formed under the auspices of the Cold War, it conducted extensive investigations into a non-existent communist espionage organisation: the allegedly resurrected "Rote Kapelle". In fact, it investigated survivors of the resistance who had returned from the Nazi camps and prisons or from exile and were serious about a new democratic beginning. For the men who had rescued themselves from positions of responsibility in the Nazi regime into the Gehlen service, the revival of the Gestapo myth served to denounce Nazi opponents, to stoke fears of communist infiltration and thus to secure their own institutional survival.
