Description
Since the Bundeswehr was established in 1955, more than 3300 soldiers have lost their lives in service. Only a minority of them died in combat. By far the majority died in accidents. The constantly repeated promise to preserve the public memory of all these dead fell flat.
Not until the start of the Afghanistan mission in 2002 did a rethink begin, which culminated in the dedication of the Bundeswehr's Berlin Memorial in 2009. Since then, the Bundeswehr has officially and publicly commemorated its dead soldiers.
Why did the Bundeswehr refuse for so long to have a publicly visible and permanent memorial? Julia Katharina Nordmann sheds light on the complex reasons for this behaviour. At the same time, she reconstructs the long and arduous process that led to the formation of a culture of remembrance that today pays tribute to the dead of the Bundeswehr in many different ways. Volume 80 of the series "Beiträge zur Militärgeschichte".
