War in the Dodecanese, after the tragic Italian Armistice of 8 September 1943 and the landing of the Anglo-Americans in Salerno (Operation Avalanche) and in the regions of southern Italy, the German Navy and Air Force had to commit themselves to the maximum in the Dodecanese , the group of twelve Aegean Islands, including Rhodes, which Italy had obtained after the Italian-Turkish war of 1911. The ensuing military campaign, known as the Dodecanese, involved a whole series of war events largely favored by the great confusion and often lack of directives from the Italian general staff which led the Italian troops to largely unite with the Anglo-Greek allied forces stationed in the Dodecanese, to try to cope with the German military power which immediately organized itself to try to recover the control of the situation. in some cases there were fierce and terrible battles, such as in Leros, Rhodes and Kos which ended with the total defeat of the allied forces.
