This volume contains the memories of two highly decorated members of the German Wehrmacht during the Second World War.
Günther Bierbrauer joined the Luftwaffe in 1939 at the age of 17 and became an aircraft pilot and observer in the 14th Railway Night Fighter Squadron of Fighter Wing 27 "Boelcke". He was awarded, among other things, the bronze, silver and gold Front Flight Commendation for fighter pilots - including the pendant for 300 enemy flights - as well as the Luftwaffe Cup of Honour, the German Cross in Gold and the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross.
Erich Klein was drafted into the artillery in 1937 at the age of eighteen and took part in many well-known military operations. He was a member of the 60th Infantry Division, which perished in Stalingrad, witnessed the collapse of Army Group "Centre" in the summer of 1944 with the "Feldherrenhalle" division and was finally wounded and taken prisoner of war by the Soviets in the cauldron of Budapest. He was honoured with the German Cross in Gold and later became a Major in the German Army Reserve before returning to his homeland in 1955.
