Description
This book presents the memories of two young men who joined the Wehrmacht or Waffen-SS at the age of 17. Gottfried Funk was first drafted into the Luftwaffe in April 1942 and voluntarily transferred to the Waffen-SS
at the end of 1944. There he was a medical grade in the 9th SS Panzer Division "Hohenstaufen" and took part in the battles in Hungary and the retreat to Austria.
He became a prisoner of war and experienced and survived, among other things, the notorious US prison camp Ebensee. Karl Käfferlein was drafted into the Waffen-SS in January 1943, first in Stettin and then in Dachau, where he was also trained to the rank of medical orderly. He was then transferred to the SS Jäger Battalion 500 in central Russia, where he took part in numerous "gang fights" and the heavy retreat in the summer of 1944. Deployed to put down the Warsaw Uprising, he was finally deployed in the SS Panzer Divisions "Wiking" and "Totenkopf". Wounded in 1945, Käfferlein became an American prisoner of war.
