Description
June 1897: England celebrates Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. The highlight of the celebrations is a memorable military parade in London, reminding Britons that their country stands at the head of the greatest empire the world has ever seen. Their representatives are all present, dressed for the occasion in their finest regalia: the Scottish bagpipers, the Indian princes of the Indian Imperial Service Troops, the camel riders from Rajasthan, the hussars from Canada, the Hong Kong police, the horsemen from Natal and those from Australia, soldiers from sub-Saharan Africa, those from Malaysia, Jamaicans, Cypriots, Dayaks from North Borneo... a countless crowd. In the background is Victoria's declaration to her Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli: "If we want to maintain our position as a leading power, we must, with our Indian Empire and our large colonies, be constantly prepared for attacks and wars anywhere in the world." In fact, the Sepoy Rebellion broke out in 1857, an uprising of Indians against the English, a prelude to many other conflicts: the Zulu and Boer Wars, clashes in Sudan and Asia, the "Great Game" in Afghanistan, the Boxer Rebellion in China, without forgetting the two particularly deadly world wars. A long litany of battles, dramas and great deeds.
