An archaeological-historical publication on the current state of research on Bavaria in Roman times for a broader public has been lacking - until today: this volume presents the current knowledge on the (cultural) history of this epoch on the basis of a wealth of new details. In doing so, the focus extends both temporally and spatially beyond the topic under discussion: to the northern Bavarian "Barbaricum", which was inhabited by Germanic tribes at the time, and to the transition from Roman rule to the Bavarian tribal duchy, because it was precisely the Roman-Germanic relationship that had a lasting influence on the history of Roman Bavaria. A topographical section brings together all the central Bavarian Roman sites based on the latest research. In addition, this new fundamental work offers a detailed, annotated presentation of the most important Latin inscriptions and text sources on the history of Roman Bavaria, including translations.
