The myth that the Foreign Office was a haven of resistance between 1933 and 1945 is one of the longest-lived legends about the Third Reich. But how did the members of the Foreign Office really behave after Hitler came to power? And how did they then face up to their past in the Federal Republic? Based on numerous files, some of which have been kept under lock and key until today, the book clears up old legends and corrects the historical image of one of the country's most important political elites. Written for a broad audience, the book presents the results of the independent commission of historians appointed by Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer in 2005 to come to terms with the history of the Foreign Office during the National Socialist era and in the Federal Republic of Germany.
