Mainly based on eyewitness accounts, the author describes the battle for East Prussia and especially the fierce but ultimately futile defence of the fortress city of Königsberg by German troops against the inexorably advancing Red Army in early 1945. It records not only the course of military operations on both sides, but also the suffering of the civilians who tried to flee across the Baltic Sea from the vengeance of the Soviet soldiers.
