A volume from the series "Studies in War, Society, and the Military". World War I was not only a war of the soldiers at the front or the civilians in the areas directly affected by the war, but it was also a war of the men, women and children who stayed at home, forming, as it were, the "army" of the home front. The mass-produced, colourful war posters, visible in many places, were a visible sign of this totalisation of war in the industrial age. The essays collected in this anthology examine the use of war posters in the major states involved in the war, describe and explain their visual content, and document the impact of the posters on those who saw them constantly.
