A history of the Katyn massacre, which claimed the lives of more than 22000 Polish army personnel. The war crime was committed by men of the Soviet NKVD, but the gruesome scene was discovered in the spring of 1943 by the German occupiers, who exploited the mass murder for their own propaganda purposes. Since then, a propaganda war has raged between Germany and the USSR, between East and West, over the Katyn deaths. The author devotes particular attention to the interpretation, reinterpretation and exploitation of the dead by the different political camps and states.
