The personal account of SS General Karl Wolff, who was ordered to Italy as "Supreme SS and Police Leader" after the deposition and arrest of Benito Mussolini, where, among other things, he constituted the "Repubblica Sociale Italiana". With German defeat looming, he succeeded in establishing contact with the US secret service under Alan W. Dulles, which resided in the Alpine republic, via connections to the Vatican and his intermediaries in Switzerland and, after a dramatic marathon of negotiations between Zurich, Ascona, Berlin and various headquarters, ended the war in Italy prematurely with a partial capitulation.
