The first Medium Tank M4 "Sherman" tanks rolled off the production line in February 1942, remained in production for the rest of World War II and was still in service two decades later. Almost unwittingly it was the most important weapon the U.S. Army deployed on the land battlefield and production exceeded 49000, but it also had glaring faults and weaknesses. The book follows the "Shermans" development and numerous modifications, telling the story of this tank not just through technical data but also in the words of the soldiers who fought in it. Detailed appendices provide vehicle specifications and manufacturing details, while comparative tables allow the reader to make at-a-glance assessments of how the "Sherman" matched up to its rivals on both sides.
