During the Croatian Homeland War 1991-1995, the Croatian Armed Forces had numerous special pur-poses units. One of such units was the Velebit Mountain Company, whose capabilities were so unique it is hard to compare it to any other special purposes unit in the Croatian Army. Still, public knows little about it. The Serbian aggression on Croatia motivated numerous civilians of different professional backgrounds and skill sets to join the defense of the homeland. People who joined the Velebit Mountain Company were top-ranking alpinists, speleologists and mountain rescuers, experts in their respective fields: 16 members of the unit climbed the Himalaya and nine conquered the highest peak of the world - Mt. Everest.
