The weapons converted for the U.S. Army and later also newly manufactured were Model 1860 Army revolvers with 8-inch barrels. These fired the .44 Martin centrefire cartridges used by the Army at the time, which were also used by the one thousand Smith & Wesson Model 3s with down-folding barrels delivered to the Army in March 1871.
