Marshal Jean Lannes (* 11 April 1769 - Ä 31 May 1809) was MarÃchal d' Empire and one of NapolÃon Bonaparte's closest friends. He took part in all of Napoleon's campaigns since 1796 and was fatally wounded at the Battle of Aspern. In the 1809 campaign against Austria, he commanded the centre at Aspern-Essling. On the second day of the battle, 22 May, as he rode through the lines to encourage the soldiers, a cannonball severely wounded him in both legs. One leg was amputated, but he finally succumbed to gangrene on 31 May in Kaiserebersdorf near Vienna. His body was taken to Straßburg, buried in the Pantheon in Paris in 1810 and later in the PÅre Lachaise cemetery.
