The rank of hetman is derived from the old Middle German term für den Hauptmann. The word het in direct âtranslation means head.[1] The hetman was the second in command after the king between the 15th and 18th centuries in Poland and Lithuania, and the Cossacks also initially called their commander hetman. -Wikipedia-
