A volume from the series "Publications of the Berlin Wall Foundation". The final division of Berlin that began with the construction of the Wall also led to the division of urban rail transport. However, the rail networks did not correspond to the boundaries established by the four victorious powers in Potsdam in 1945. This resulted in peculiar situations, to which two U-Bahn lines and one S-Bahn line in particular contributed, which ran between West Berlin and West Berlin, but each of which ran under East Berlin in one section. From then on, the stations there were accessible neither to East nor West Berliners, but only to the police, the border troops and the state security forces, who made every effort to secure them against escape attempts and to make them disappear from the public consciousness. Fifteen contributions deal with the most diverse aspects of the underground border events and recall them with impressive, rare photos. The volume is intended as a companion book to the exhibition "Border and Ghost Stations in Divided Berlin", which can be seen as a permanent exhibition in Berlin's Nordbahnhof.
