Description
The author, himself an experienced pilot and the last commander of the Air Transport Command, which was disbanded in 2010, has, with the participation of numerous contemporary witnesses, given a multi-faceted and lively description of the conception and set-up, the organisational structures and development of the helicopter units and rescue squadrons of the German Air Force, as well as their demanding missions up to 1971. As in his book "Die Transportflieger der Luftwaffe 1956 bis 1971" (The Air Force Transport Pilots 1956 to 1971), he puts the persons involved in this important service branch of the Air Force in the foreground in a vivid and easy-to-read manner. The extensive appendix, in addition to the bibliographical references, is particularly useful for looking up facts and figures from that period.
The helicopters introduced in the early years of the Luftwaffe quickly proved themselves to be an indispensable and highly mobile means of transport for the entire Bundeswehr and beyond. Already in their first missions at home and abroad, the crews proved their high performance, flexibility and improvisation skills. Above all, however, they performed unparalleled work early on in SAR service and as rescue pilots, not only for the Bundeswehr, before a civilian air rescue network was gradually established from 1971 onwards. For many Germans, the SAR pilots (from 1968 with the Bell UH-1D), with their striking orange doors, are also the epitome of rapid assistance from the air. Their range of tasks also included liaison flights, missions in the mountains and over the sea as well as emergency transports of personnel (including VIPs) and material. Volume 9 of the series "Schriften zur Geschichte der Deutschen Luftwaffe".
