Today's Bundeswehr missions would not be possible without military transport aviation. The motto of the transport pilots "First in - Last out" was and is an expression of their professional soldierly self-image in worldwide operations from the very beginning.
Major General (ret.) Hans-Werner Ahrens, experienced transport pilot and last commander of the Air Transport Command, which was disbanded in 2010, has, with the participation of numerous contemporary witnesses, given a multi-faceted and lively description of the conception, the build-up, the organisational structures, the development of military transport aviation and its demanding missions from the beginnings to the year 1971. A volume from the series "Schriften zur Geschichte der deutschen Luftwaffe".
