This commemorative publication commemorates the namesake of the barracks at the Eifel location of Mayen. A team of authors from the Bundeswehr's Operational Communications Centre analysed Hauschild's diaries, letters, manuscripts and numerous other sources to determine whether Hauschild, who served in the war, could be a tradition-builder for the Bundeswehr.
Hauschild, born in 1921, served as an officer in two fundamentally different armies, the Wehrmacht and the Bundeswehr. In the commemorative volume, Hauschild's personal attitudes to central events of his time, such as the assassination attempt of 20 July 1944, as well as his fundamental attitudes, such as to the image of the enemy in the Cold War, are explained in detail. It becomes clear that Hauschild's patterns of thought and behaviour were shaped by timeless values that can provide orientation for the present and future across generations. Hauschild will also be remembered as the founding father of the Bundeswehr's radio station Radio Andernach and as the well-known and successful author of the novel "Judgement for Captain Brencken". Hauschild was also the editor of numerous Army yearbooks, a highly decorated television chef, and much more. The commemorative publication is enriched by a contribution by Thomas Hauschild about his father as well as words of greeting by Vice Admiral Dr. Thomas Daum, Inspector Cyber and Information Space, and Prof. Dr. Sönke Neitzel, University of Potsdam. Furthermore, the team of authors received expert support from the Centre for Military History and Social Sciences of the German Armed Forces and the Federal Archives, Military Archives Division.
