At only 21 years of age, the First World War begins for a young lieutenant. He records his wartime experiences as a cavalry officer on the Eastern Front up to his deployment as an infantry battalion commander in the battles of the Western Front in diaries, which he summarises in handwriting after the end of the war. Eberhard von Senden describes the everyday life of war in combat, holding out and surviving, and takes a critical stance on operations, tactics and fighting methods.
He describes principles of leadership in superior and subordinate areas. He refers to the timeless virtues of the soldier: Bravery, comradeship, loyalty to the fatherland, decisiveness, perseverance and fulfilment of duty. These virtues are also the basis of leadership today in the Bundeswehr's foreign missions close to war. 100 years later, his son, retired Major General Friedrich von Senden, publishes these authentic records of a life story before the war and of his experiences as an officer in the First World War, based on available sources, pictures and maps. This provides an interesting opportunity for comparison, e.g. with the current challenges in the Bundeswehr's operations, with questions of leadership and the application of military leadership principles. The book is thus also a contribution to the tradition decree of the Bundeswehr.
