Claas Siano examines for the first time the procurement and use of the Lockheed F-104 Starfighter in the Bundeswehr, also drawing on sources from the Bundestag and the Luftwaffe leadership. In this way, he is able to prove that the problems that led to the Starfighter crisis in 1965/66 were primarily self-inflicted. The Luftwaffe was not only organisationally overburdened with the Starfighter weapon system. It also rarely provided comprehensive and unambiguous information within the Bundeswehr and the Federal Ministry of Defence, as well as in the political arena.
