Dieter Wolf, born in 1937, reports on his career in the Bundeswehr during the Cold War and his subsequent civilian professional career. The book focuses on his fascinating experiences as head of the counterintelligence department at the Military Counterintelligence Service (MAD). At that time, he had to deal with Stasi agents, defectors, criminals and "moles".
The author was awarded honorary membership in the NATO service, "Allied Command Europe Counter Intelligence Agency". On his retirement from the Bundeswehr in 1987, the then Federal Minister of Defence, Manfred Wörner, awarded him the Bundeswehr Cross of Honour in Gold on behalf of the Federal Republic of Germany for exemplary fulfilment of the soldier's duties. His work in the private sector was no less eventful, including as head of the security departments of the Rheinmetall Group in Düsseldorf and of international companies based in Germany. In addition, Dieter Wolf recounts his experiences in Bundeswehr service sports as an extremely successful all-round athlete. But the book also touches on serious private strokes of fate, such as the hostage-taking and murder of his son by the terrorist organisation of the Khmer Rouge rebels and his wife's severe dementia. Experiences that still burden the author today and are the subject of another book.
