The Second World War cost countless lives and left huge gaps in many families. Evi Simeoni still feels the powerlessness that the death of her uncle Heinz Meyer caused in the family to this day. At the age of 18, Heinz was drafted away from his school desk for military service and five and a half years later, shortly before the end of the war, he was killed by a sniper. Simeoni places his letters, many of which have been preserved, in the context of the times and interweaves his words with her research into her own family history.
