After the first year of the war, the German Luftwaffe leadership had to recognise that the Junkers Ju 87B no longer met the requirements in many areas. The increasingly strong ground defences and fighter operations during the war led to a reorganisation of the Ju 87's tasks as a battle fighter. The D version received a more powerful engine, a new aerodynamic fairing and stronger armour. Its new task was now primarily ground combat, which included anti-tank operations using a 3.7 cm calibre gun. Finally, in the spring of 1944, work began on converting the Ju 87D-3 into G-1 and G-2 tank destroyers.
