The numerous and complex changes in the organisation and tasks of the criminal investigation department from 1945 to 1952. Beginning with the establishment phase in the Soviet occupation zone (SBZ), the descriptions lead up to the dissolution of the Länder in 1952. With a high density of facts, the processes of change are described both in the individual hierarchical levels and in the substantive areas of responsibility. The effects on investigative practice are not ignored. A great deal of space is devoted to the education and training system. The working and living conditions in this early phase of the criminal investigation department are described, including the provision of clothing, food and housing.
