Description
Adhémar de Montail, Bishop of Metz (1327-1362)
Various chroniclers - including Jean Froissart - report the participation of a posse of the Bishop of Metz in the Battle of Crecy (1346). This bannered party, which was probably under the personal command of the bishop, will have stood in the conroi (slaughter pile) of the Duke of Lorraine.
The bishop himself escaped from the battle.
He held the episcopal see from 1327 until his death on 12 March 1362. His coat of arms is preserved in his sarcophagus in Metz Cathedral. - Above the coat of arms of Adhemar de Monteil (in red three (2,1 ) golden tolosan crosses) lies a silver (white) bishop's crook, partly with a golden (yellow) bend, in a pole position as a sign of spiritual dignity.
A city contingent perhaps also fought under the bishop's banner.
Soldiers of the city of Metz wore a white/black livery. First vouched for in 1462, it can be assumed, however, that this was already in use earlier.
