The Panzerkampfwagen VI Ausf. Tiger I is certainly one of the best-known tanks of the Second World War. It was developed to provide the Wehrmacht's armoured divisions with a heavily armoured and heavily armed tank and to supplement the most popular medium tanks, the Panzer III and Panzer IV, which were no longer able to fight the enemy tanks effectively. The main armament was the famous and deadly 88 mm long anti-tank gun KwK 36 L/56. Installed in the turret and protected by a heavy 120 mm shield, it was capable of penetrating the armour of any enemy vehicle of the time, even over long distances. It was deployed in all major theatres of operations and took an active part in German military operations in Normandy and on the Western Front. Although the heavy tank struggled with reliability and operational problems, in the hands of experienced crews it was always greatly feared by the Allied forces.
